Carson Yeung pleads not guilty

BIRMINGHAM City owner Carson Yeung has pleaded not guilty to money-laundering charges on the first day of his trial in Hong Kong.

Yeung is facing five charges of moving £60m illicitly through bank accounts controlled by himself and his father.

But his defence team moved to have the charges against him thrown out of court.

Judge Douglas Yau was set to hear arguments for and against the move.

The trial was due to start in November last year but Yeung won a five-month delay after his lawyers argued that more time was needed to gather evidence for his defence.

Yeung made his fortune investing in Macau in the 1990s and is a well-known property developer in Hong Kong.

The allegations predate Yeung’s involvement with Birmingham City, which he bought in 2009 for £81.5m.

Trading in Birmingham International Holdings (BIH), the company which owns Birmingham City FC, has been suspended since the arrest of Yeung, its largest shareholder.
