Coventry City agree terms on potential new stadium site

COVENTRY City FC have agreed terms on a potential new stadium site and have entered into exclusive talks on a second site.

According to the club’s official website, the Sky Blues have agreed terms, subject to contract, on a site within six miles of the city centre.

It hasn’t named the location but The Coventry Telegraph newspaper is confidently reporting that the site in question is the Brandon speedway site, home of the Coventry Bees and a venue for greyhound racing.

It suggests the second site being discussed is just beyond the city’s boundaries.

Coventry City – which is seeking a new home after falling out with the owners of the Ricoh Arena in a dispute over unpaid rent – says it is aiming to finalise a deal within eight weeks, paving the way for a new facility for the Sky Blues.

To ensure the project hits the ground running the club has appointed advisers to realise its plans for the new base.

Birmingham-based property consultancy CBRE is advising on the land acquisition.

It will work alongside a team of advisers including planning consultants Turley Associates, which advised on the delivery of the revamped Edgbaston Stadium.

Coventry City FC chief executive Tim Fisher said: “We completely understand the pain the groundshare is going to cause our supporters but we have a clear path to return to the Coventry area.

“We are under no illusions at just how tough it is going to be for the next three years but there is absolutely no question that Coventry City Football Club’s long-term future is in this area.

“Once we have agreement on a site, we will begin a consultation process with our supporters because we want this to be their home – a home that everyone can be proud of.”

The club remains in administration with the start of the new League One season only days away.
