Businesses given help with networking

INCREASING sales and developing new business relationships are among topics to be featured at a series of networking workshops taking place in the West Midlands.

The Business Link West Midlands seminars, which will take place in Birmingham, Shropshire and Solihull, aim to help companies improve their networking skills.

Led by ‘Midlands Networker of the Year’ Helen Dowling, the free sessions will strip networking to the bare bones in a bid to provide useful tips on choosing the right sessions to go to, the preparation firms need to undertake and how best to sell their businesses when they get there.

“The last ‘Networking Made Easy’ workshops were a huge success, with more than 300 different companies attending and using what they learned to win new business,” said Helen Goring, head of marketing and events at Business Link West Midlands.

“From the feedback we received, it was clear that these were very useful events and that individuals wanted further sessions to learn more ‘tricks of the trade’ – and that is exactly what we are giving the West Midlands’ business community with these workshops.”

The events show delegates how to work a room effectively and remove themselves from people without causing offence. Visitors will also be talked through what to do with all the business cards they collect and how to describe what their business does in 30 seconds.

Ms Dowling, who started Exceptional Training in 2003, said: “Business no longer comes to you these days and firms need to have a new approach to growing and securing sales.

“Networking is what everyone turns to as the easy option, but it can be extremely complex and there’s a myriad of different events to consider. The key to it is picking the right session and then making sure you know what to do when you get there – these workshops equip delegates with these exact skills.”

The sessions take place at:

•    Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, Telford – September 9
•    St Johns Hotel, Solihull – September 14
•    Longbridge Technology Park, Birmingham – September 22
