Gary Cardin quits Deloitte Real Estate to join CBRE

HIGH profile property consultant Gary Cardin is leaving Deloitte Real Estate to join CBRE.

Cardin, partner in charge at Deloitte Real Estate in Birmingham and head of the planning and development team, joins CBRE as senior director and head of the planning team in the Midlands.

The move will raise further questions about the future of Deloitte Real Estate in the city. In November Philippa Pickavance, head of agency at the firm in Birmingham and one of the city’s best-known commercial property figures, was made redundant.

One of her team was also laid off which effectively closed the firm’s office lettings department in Birmingham.

One of the region’s most respected planning consultants, Cardin advises developers and investors, public sector bodies and local authorities across the region.

His work includes regeneration, town centre development and commercial planning advice. He prepares development appraisals planning applications and advises on appeals; he also undertakes expert witness work, public enquiries, environmental assessments, urban capacity studies and employment studies.

He is currently advising on some of the Midlands most prominent schemes, including Paradise Circus, Mailbox, the redevelopment of the southern precinct in Coventry City Centre, and the redevelopment of the Grand Hotel in Birmingham.

Previous work includes gaining the planning permission that paved the way for the redevelopment of New Street Station, Martineau Galleries, and the redevelopment of the Post & Mail building. He is also an adviser to Coventry City Council, Land Fund, Miller Homes and many other clients and schemes across the region.

In addition to his work within the specialist planning field, Cardin is also a key figure in Birmingham’s business community. He is chair of the Colmore Business District and former chair of Birmingham Forward. He is also a board director of Birmingham Opera Company.

Martin Guest, managing director of the Birmingham office of CBRE, said: “Gary is undoubtedly the go-to planner in the Midlands. It’s a massive coup for CBRE to get him on board. We look forward to Gary providing strategic support to many of our existing teams.”

Cardin is a former head of Drivers Jonas in the Midlands, where he worked for 11 years, He joined Deloitte Real Estate in 2010 following the acquisition of Drivers Jonas by the accountancy and advisory giant.

He said: “It is very rare that a set of circumstances presents itself with an opportunity that is just too good to miss.

“I very much look forward to joining the 100 strong team at CBRE and developing a wider strategy for planning across the Midlands. It is an exciting time to be taking up a new role and I relish the opportunity it presents.”
