Trade union Unite plans 100,000 sq ft Brum training base

UNITE, the UK’s biggest trade union, has chosen central Birmingham as the location of its national training centre.

In what would be a boost to the local authority’s financial position, it is hoping to buy land from Birmingham City Council at Jennens Road/Woodcock Street near Birmingham Science Park Aston and Aston University.

The council itself has a large office building in Woodcock Street.

Unite is planning to consolidate its UK training centre, West Midlands offices and a delegates hotel into an 100,000 sq ft-plus, according to reports in CoStar News.

The online site reports that Unite, which has 1.42m members, has spent the past two years carrying out a review of potential sites across the UK able to accommodate a rationalisation of its centres for education as well as the hotel requirements of education delegates.

Birmingham City Council is due to meet to sign off the deal but in a statement ahead of the meeting it said: “The proposed investment in this new facility by Unite will be a significant boost to the local as well as the regional economy as the National Education/Training Centre is envisaged to be state of the art and will attract many conferences as well as delegates from across the country.”

Unite’s current West Midlands Distict office is located in offices in Birmingham’s Broad Street.
