New move is the icing on the cake for bakery firm

A SPECIALIST shop baking and designing handmade cakes has expanded into Solihull town centre and created 10 new jobs.

The Cake Gallery, which has opened in Mill Lane, was established by Jonathan Cockerill in Birmingham in 1984. The business moved to Melchett Road at Kings Norton Business Centre nine years later and 12 staff will continue to work there following the opening of the Solihull shop.

Barbara Blay, finance director at The Cake Gallery, said: “It took six months to find the right premises and everyone worked really hard to transform the store to make sure we opened on time.

“We have fitted an oven at the back of the shop so that when you open the door, there is the wonderful smell of fresh cakes having been baked for customers to enjoy.

“It is open-plan so customers and passers-by can watch staff decorating cakes which people love to do and we have made the window display eye-catching with a variety of cakes of all shapes and sizes from Despicable Me characters to a red motor car.”

She said the firm had employed an extra 10 staff over the two units including cake artists. The Kings Norton business will remain the base for the commercial operation and delivery service.

“This is a really exciting time as we approach our 30th anniversary this August and we hope by moving into Solihull town centre and the extra footfall that will bring, it will lead to the business going from strength to strength,” she added.

The firm was advised in the move by accountants Baldwins. Gregg Davenport, who works at the firm’s Stourbridge office, provided the advice and assisted with forming The Cake Gallery as a limited company.
