Midland News Association begins consultation on newspaper redundancies

NEWSPAPER group, the Midland News Association, publisher of the Express & Star and Shropshire Star, has begun consulting with staff over redundancies as part of proposals to restructure the company.

The MNA is looking to increase its digital operation to meet the needs of its online audience, enhancing revenues in the process.

The move is likely to mean the end of same-day printing for the newspapers as they switch to overnight publications.

The restructuring will also see across-the-board redundancies with as many as 76 people – 12 in editorial – possibly set to lose their jobs.

The brunt will fall on the circulation department, as the focus of the operation shifts move towards an online platform.

An MNA spokesman said: “Staff consultation has begun on proposals which will ensure the MNA is better positioned to best serve our print and digital audiences.

“The proposals being considered will shape a strong future for the MNA, where it remains the leading publisher in its markets.”

A letter by Claverley Group chief executive Phil Inman has been sent to all staff, informing them of the consultation.

The MNA is the UK’s largest independent regional publisher, with a portfolio including Britain’s biggest selling regional newspaper the Express & Star, seventh biggest title the Shropshire Star, weekly newspapers, glossy magazines, websites and digital app subscriptions.
