Lifestyle: Travel – Flybe celebrates launch of new Reykjavik service from Birmingham

EUROPE’S largest independent regional airline, Flybe, has celebrated the start of its new summer ‘twilight’ flights to Reykjavik Keflavik and Ibiza from Birmingham Airport.

The new services will operate through to September 7, 2014, with flights to Reykjavik reverting at the end of October to a daylight schedule for the winter.

The inaugural flight, led by Flybe’s Routes Director, Fred Kochak was greeted by the UK Ambassador to Iceland, Stuart Gill.

Gill said: “I am delighted to be here to welcome the inaugural Flybe flight from Birmingham to Reykjavik. British tourists are coming to Iceland in increasing numbers – more now than from any other nation – to enjoy Iceland’s spectacular sights all year round. It’s one more example of the ever closer links between our two countries and I congratulate Flybe on becoming the newest airline to fly here.”

Kochak added: “Flybe is truly proud to be the first to offer scheduled flights between these two great cities, linking Birmingham and Reykjavik with regular flights for the first time.

“The enthusiastic welcome we have received has been overwhelming and we are pleased with the way in which both of our new twilight routes have been received by those wanting to experience Iceland and Spain.”

Every year, thousands of people head to Reykjavík – the world’s northernmost capital city – to sample the long summer nights where the sun never truly sets.

Flybe’s twilight flights to both destinations have been timed to arrive while the vibrant nightlife scenes at both destinations are still in full swing.

Those travelling on the inaugural flight were invited to sample Iceland’s world-renowned geothermal wonders, based around the Geysir hot spring, and to Langjökull, the island´s second largest glacier.

Flybe is also expecting the Reykjavik service to prove popular in early July with football fans heading between Northern Ireland and Iceland for the first qualifying rounds of the Europa Cup. The fans are expected to use the service after flying to Birmingham from Belfast.
