Aussie manufacturer aims to be a drag on UK market with new Birmingham operation

AUSTRALIAN manufacturer Turbosmart has continued its global expansion with the opening of a new operation in Birmingham.

The company, which manufactures high performance turbo management and boost control accessories for the motorsport and drag racing sector, is aiming to capitalise on increased demand for its goods.

It has been exporting products to the UK for many years, and is now targeting massive expansion in the market, as well as elsewhere in Europe and the Middle East.

The Birmingham facility, in Wharton Street, Aston, comprises the warehousing, sales, marketing and local research and development operations.

Global expansion has been a key factor in its growth ever since the business was set up in Sydney in 1997. In 2007 it established Turbosmart USA in Southern California as the company’s distribution hub for the American market and that operation continues to grow.

Turbosmart UK aims to emulate this success by bringing a more personalised approach, tailored specifically to the UK market. This means hiring UK workers, continuing to support the local motorsport sector and implementing vital R&D programmes.

Chris Milne, newly appointed General Manager of Turbosmart UK, said: “The UK region represents a massive opportunity for us moving forward.

“Opening our own facility here is a truly exciting project, as it allows us access to the local market and vehicles so we can continue to adapt ourselves, and our technology to best support the UK and Europe.

“We’re bringing a full research and development programme with us, and will be looking for the right people to help us build on our existing relationships with the local distributors and sponsored drivers we’ve been working with for the past decade.”

Birmingham accountants and business advisory firm Smith Cooper has been acting for the firm as it sought to establish the operation in the city by providing help with banking facilities, corporate finance solutions and tax requirements.

Jeremy Cope, Audit Accounts Tax Partner at Smith Cooper, said: “This move presents a fantastic opportunity for Turbosmart to capitalise on the huge demand in the UK market for its high quality products.

“We’re passionate about using our local knowledge and experience to help international businesses like Turbosmart make their mark in Birmingham, and we look forward with working with the management team moving forward.”
