ExtraCare given nod on £35m Longbridge retirement village

BIRMINGHAM City Council has resolved to grant planning permission for a £35m retirement village at developer St Modwen’s £1bn Longbridge regeneration scheme.

Set on five acres fronting Lickey Road on the edge of Longbridge town centre, the three and five storey village will provide 260 one and two bed apartments.

Up to 50 jobs will be delivered with a further 200 jobs on site during the construction phase.

The village is one of at least five developments planned for Birmingham as part of a £200m development programme between The ExtraCare Charitable Trust and Birmingham City Council.

Three of the villages have already opened, most recently a 240-home village on Hagley Road in Edgbaston last October. Another is set to open in Bournville next year.

The ExtraCare Charitable Trust submitted the planning application for the retirement village, including a new access road and roundabout, undercroft parking and landscaping, to Birmingham City Council after purchasing the land from Quinton, Birmingham-based St Modwen.

Mark Curran, development and sales director at The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, said: “We are delighted with this decision from Birmingham City Council.

“This development will further secure Birmingham’s position as a leading provider of innovative retirement communities in the UK.”

Mike Murray, senior development surveyor at St Modwen, said: “This decision marks a significant step forward for what will be a very exciting addition to the evolving Longbridge regeneration project.”
