£6.5m factory expansion cements Telford as investment hotspot claims council

The £6.5m expansion of a Telford factory is proof of Telford’s status as a business investment hotspot, the area’s local authority has claimed.

The expansion of Craemer UK’s plastic injection moulding facility in Hortonwood is expected lead to an increase in production of 35% and create a dozen new jobs.
The metal forming, plastics processing and tool making specialist has invested in growth after its annual turnover tripled during the past eight years.

Growth began with the production of the Kliko brand wheeled bin. The group now supplies wheelie bins to over 40% of local authorities across the UK and export 20% of products made in Telford to Germany, Holland, Scandinavia and The Republic of Ireland.

The company’s ambitious plans also include the introduction of a plastic pallet production line scheduled for 2015, to help provide sustainable material handling solutions for the automotive, food production, pharmaceutical and logistics industries.

Steve Poppitt, Sales Director at Craemer, Telford, said: “We are pleased to open our new extension that will see our UK operation significantly grow, with more products being introduced in the next 12 months.  As well as helping our production and annual turnover, the extension means that we are looking to fill 13 new positions to join our team over the coming months.

“Today’s market calls for flexibility, continuous research and learning and swift response to new developments. For Craemer, this means co-operation, the sharing and exchange of knowledge at all business levels and genuine partnership; this is the way to a successful future.

“Working with Telford & Wrekin Council and UK Trade Investment we have received pre-planning advice and guidance to help us on our journey.”

Telford & Wrekin Council said its Invest in Telford Campaign continued to support companies looking to expand and grow in the borough.

Cllr Bill McClements, cabinet member for Finance and Enterprise, said: “We are delighted that Craemer continues to grow and prosper in Telford and Wrekin and have enjoyed working with them over the years to support and see their growth plans come to fruition.

“This news is another feather in Telford’s cap, showcasing the borough as a world class centre for polymers.”

Telford is at the heart of a cluster of more than 200 plastics companies based in the region, of which more than 40 are located in Telford itself.
