Huge profit surge as Aldi continues to appeal to bargain hunting shoppers

DISCOUNT supermarket chain Aldi, which has its UK headquarters in Atherstone, has announced record financial results.

Group operating profit for 2013 rose by more than 50% on the previous year with UK turnover reaching a record high of £5.2bn, up from £3.89bn.

And Aldi UK pre-tax profit rose 65% to £260.9m in the year ending 31st December.

Roman Heidi, group managing director of Aldi UK, said: “We keep prices constantly low while keeping product quality consistently high, which is exactly what shoppers want.

“They had become used to thinking you have to pay more for better products. We’ve shown them this doesn’t have to be the case.”

German-owned Aldi’s low prices have tempted customers away from other supermarkets and it says it is now benefiting from the ‘price war’ that has broken out between Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.
