Citadel provides wiggle room for retailer

WIGGLE, the online cycling and tri-sports retailer, has committed to a long-term lease at the Citadel Logistics Centre in Wolverhampton.

The move heralds a new chapter for Wiggle, which has up to now been largely based in or around Portsmouth.

Its relocation comes on the back of sustained growth in recent years.

With origins dating back to the 1920s, the business officially started trading in 1999, initially selling cycling accessories. By 2003 the company had expanded its offer to include running and swimming products.

The retailer was acquired in 2011 by European private equity firm, Bridgepoint, in a deal worth £180m. Following the acquisition, Wiggle launched 11 new websites for overseas consumers in 2012.

The company now sells to customers worldwide, in ten different languages and 14 different currencies.

Nicholas Pink, operations and programme director at Wiggle, said: “As the business has continued to grow, we require additional resources to service the needs of our customers. Citadel Logistics Centre’s central location and skilled local workforce will play a key role in supporting our expansion plans.”

Birmingham law firm Gateley advised it on the relocation.

The Gateley team was led by Birmingham based real estate senior associate, James Madill, and supported by tax associate Victoria Metcalfe, construction solicitor Christian Mulvihill and planning solicitor Zoe Walker.

Madill said: “Wiggle’s warehouse relocation is a massive coup for the region, cementing its credentials as a leading logistics hub and providing employment opportunities for the local population.

“Our close relationship with the Wiggle management team and extensive expertise within the retail sector enabled us to deliver a deal to meet Wiggle’s long-term distribution requirements.”
