Capita’s appointed to Birmingham’s iCentrum scheme

THE property and infrastructure consultancy arm of Capita has been appointed to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services on the new £7.5m iCentrum building at the Innovation Birmingham Campus.

Capita will carry out the work from its Redditch office.

The project, which recently received planning approval from Birmingham City Council, comprises a 41,700 sq ft technology business incubation facility that will create 400 skilled tech jobs and generate an estimated £25m a year to the local economy.

The building will also be the first to start on site within the Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP’s Enterprise Zone which features 26 sites within central Birmingham.

The top floor of iCentrum will feature a range of self-contained, flexible office suites and networking areas for growing entrepreneurial tech companies, while the first floor will be home to Innovation Birmingham’s Serendip incubator which supports new enterprises across the digital gaming, built environment, digital healthcare and digital media sectors.

A total of three to five new buildings are proposed at the Innovation Birmingham Campus, delivering 120,000 sq ft of purpose-designed space for Birmingham’s tech community. The other proposed buildings are anticipated to attract larger tech companies and house additional innovation functions.

Some 118 companies are currently based in the campus’ 46,000 sq ft Faraday Wharf building which opened in 2001.

The iCentrum project is due for completion in early 2016.
