JCB secures £5m contract win from UK fleet hire business

STAFFORDSHIRE excavator manufacturer JCB has won a deal worth £5m for 90 of its Loadall telecopic handler models.

The machines – used for lifting and placing loads on building sites – have been supplied to London-based plant hire specialist One Call Hire and have all been manufactured at JCB’s factory in Rocester.

The order is the first major contract win since the company announced earlier this month it would be cutting 150 jobs as a response to slowing demand in the emerging markets.

JCB has been manufacturing telehandlers for almost 40 years and is the world’s number one producer of the machines.

One Call Hire has bought the fuel-saving JCB 535-95, 540-140 and 540-170 Loadall  models which can lift to heights of 9.5, 14 and 17 metres respectively. The machines are powered by the JCB Ecomax engine, which is manufactured by the company at its plant in Derbyshire.

Tom Gleeson, Commercial and Sales Director for One Call Hire, said: “We chose JCB for this major telehandler investment due to the reliability of the products, the excellent relationship with our dealer Greenshields JCB and the value of the JCB brand among our customer base.

“Equally crucial are the cost savings we can provide for our customers by running fuel-efficient equipment. With the Ecomax engine, JCB Loadall telescopic handlers are excellent on fuel consumption. Each machine can save our customers as much £450 pounds a year in fuel, which is a reduction of 1668kg of CO2 Gas. Over a year this equates to a reduction of 112,000 kg of CO2 or nearly £30,000 across these new additions to the fleet.”

The company currently provides equipment to key areas of development in London including Stratford, Hackney, Westminster and Lewisham and supports contractors on major projects including Crossrail, where the majority of the new JCB models will be deployed.

With over 40 years’ industry experience and access to 23 nationwide depots, One Call hire is one of the UK’s leading plant hire companies. Its fleet comprises more than 3,000 machines including: 0.9 to 50 tonne excavators, self-propelled rollers, dozers, heavy lift telehandlers and dumpers.

It has committed £25.25m on new plant and machinery to date during 2014. This equates to a total spend of over £60m during the last two years. Across the fleet the average age of each machine is less than 12 months old.
