Inside job as Carillion bags £200m prisons contract

CONSTRUCTION and support services giant Carillion has won a contract to provide facilities management services in public sector prisons, estimated to be worth up to £200m over five years.

The Wolverhampton firm has been appointed by the Ministry of Justice for two contracts to provide a range of services to the National Offender Management Service for public sector prisons in two regions: London and East of England and the South West, South Central, Kent and Sussex.

The contracts, which cover approximately 50 prisons, will be for an initial five-year period, but with the potential for two subsequent one-year extensions, subject to satisfactory performance.

Carillion will provide a wide range of hard and soft facilities management services, including mechanical and electrical engineering maintenance, building fabric maintenance, energy and environmental services, waste management, escort services for contractors, cleaning services and minor building works.

The combined revenue from these two contracts is expected to be between £35m and £40m per annum.

The contract has a start date of 1 June 2015.

Carillion chief executive Richard Howson said: “We are delighted to have been selected for these services contracts.  I believe this reflects our ability to provide fully integrated service solutions that are tailored to the needs of our customers, combined with a strong focus on quality and value for money.

“We look forward to working closely with the Ministry of Justice to support its objectives of providing more efficient, high-quality services in public prisons.”
