Tesco set to close four stores in the West Midlands

SUPERMARKET group Tesco has revealed it is to close four stores in the West Midlands as part of a series of closures across the UK.

The company revealed earlier this month that it was pulling the plug on long standing new builds and would also be closing 43 existing stores as it looked to bolster its position in an increasingly competitive market.

The company has today confirmed the 43 stores which it intends to close, with the loss of around 2,000 jobs. It has begun the process of consulting with staff on the closures.

In the West Midlands, the company will close three Express convenience stores – in Bearwood, Northfield and Walsall Wood – while it will also shut its Metro store in Smethwick.

In total, 18 Express, 12 Metro, seven superstores and six Home Plus stores will close.

The Express and Home Plus stores will close on March 15 with the Tesco Metros and Superstores on the list closing on April 4.

Earlier this month, the supermarket group said it would be shelving plans for new stores on the Monaco House site in central Birmingham and on the site of the former Wolverhampton Royal Hospital.

The Birmingham store was to be on the site of a former office building on Bristol Street, near the city centre.

The retailer won a 10-year battle to build the supermarket just over a year ago.
