Supermarket giant to create 300 jobs in Coventry

SAINSBURY’S has announced plans to create 300 jobs at a new technology hub in Coventry.

The jobs – specialist roles in digital design, coding and development – will be at its sites at Ansty Park and Walsgrave.

Sainsbury’s – which is operating in an extremely competitive and increasingly price sensitive market – believes it can gain a competitive edge by improving its in-house digital and technology capabilities.

It plans to upgrade the core business systems to serve customers faster, including building better platforms for online shopping and supply chains.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Mike Coupe said: “The shape of our business is changing and digital and technology is a core part of our future growth.

“Ultimately these changes are good news for customers – the Technology Hub in Coventry will keep our systems running smoothly and experts in our Digital Lab in London will be developing new ways of digital shopping to give customers the best access to our products, services and offers.”

IT department director Richard Newsome, who will lead the team in Coventry, said: “We already have a fantastic presence in Coventry with our clothing, general merchandise and property teams, so we want to build on that specialist presence and expand our Technology Hub.

“We’re already recruiting hard for developers, designers and testers, and I would really welcome as many applications as possible for these roles. These are all exciting opportunities to join Sainsbury’s during the evolution of our business.”
