M6 Toll operator unveils new chief executive

THE operator of the UK’s only pay-as-you-drive motorway, the M6 Toll, has announced its new chief executive.

Andy Pearson takes over as Chief Executive of Midland Expressway Ltd in succession to the long-serving Tom Fanning.

Pearson has spent the last 18 months working with private investors developing manufacturing opportunities in China, prior to this he spent five years with engineering support business Babcock International Group, developing its interests in Brazil and the Middle East and as CEO of its UK Rail Construction business.

Prior to this he had 20 years experience in multinational engineering and manufacturing businesses such as SCA, Courtaulds and Unilever.  Pearson has a degree in Chemical Engineering from Strathclyde University and an MBA from Warwick University.

He said: “I am delighted to have joined the business at such an exciting time in its development with a sound financial footing, customer numbers currently up by 12% on last year, our 170 millionth passenger journey having taken place in February and with a great team of people working with me.

“My focus will be on continuing to deliver an excellent level of customer service, on growing our customer numbers further and on maintaining a strong relationship with our strategic road network partners at Highways England.  I am also keen to continue building strong relationships with the local community and supporting local charities such as the Midlands Air Ambulance, Troop Aid, Guide Dogs and Acorns Children’s Hospice to name but a few.”

He will have his work cut out for him as the 27-mile route, which bypasses the M6 between Cannock and Coleshill, continues to struggle in its attempts to lure drivers from the free-to-use network.

Fanning had served as previous CEO and had been in the role several years prior to the road’s official opening in December 2003.
