Carillion-owned subsidiary opens new hotel at the NEC and airport

A HOTEL management company, which forms part of Wolverhampton-based Carillion’s operations, has opened a new venue in the NEC complex.

The new ibis Styles Birmingham Airport NEC hotel is the second to be operated by Kew Green Hotels.

The brand’s first hotel opened in Crewe earlier this month following an extensive refurbishment. Two further sites – Haydock and Barnsley – are due to open this autumn, with Carillion’s total investment in the sites standing at £2.5m. The four hotels are part of a 54-strong Kew Green portfolio across the UK.

Ideally based to capitalise on commuters using the airport as well as people visiting the NEC for exhibitions and concerts, the new hotel could also benefit from the soon-to-open Resorts World Birmingham complex, which is also within the NEC site.

The new 166-bedroomed ibis Style has been themed to reflect Birmingham’s industrial, transport and cultural links, both historic and contemporary.

The iconic Spaghetti Junction interchange has been reimagined as a yellow design on the carpets, while vintage prints of Birmingham’s industrial history adorn the walls. The hotel bar is styled in the shape of an aeroplane wing, while bike pedals are attached to the bar stools.

Against this historical backdrop, the hotel also offers a range of modern amenities including free high speed Wi-Fi, and seven conferencing and meeting rooms.

Alison Harrison, Regional General Manager, said: “We wanted to combine our location at the heart of England with the fact that Birmingham is a real travel hub and a historic industrial force.”

Graham Norris, Director of Operations for Managed Hotels at Kew Green added: “Birmingham is a city known for its eclectic mix of sights, sounds and people, with strong transport and industrial connections and we therefore felt it was only right we paid homage to this in the design of the hotel.

“The new site allows us to continue our partnership with ibis Styles and link our strong management credentials with the distinctive design ethos of ibis. We look forward to rebranding two further hotels over the coming weeks and strengthening our offering to customers.”

Kew Green Hotels was formed in September 2001 to operate high quality limited and full service branded hotels in prime locations throughout the UK.  The company now operates in key cities including London, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham and Portsmouth.  Most of the hotels are operated under franchise agreements with some of the world’s leading hotel brands including Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn Express, Courtyard by Marriott and Ramada.  Kew Green Group also manage the Richmond Hill Hotel, a four star unbranded Georgian hotel in West London and iconic five-star Grand Hotel in Brighton.
