T20 Finals Day attracts record ticket sales for Edgbaston

WARWICKSHIRE county cricket club has confirmed tomorrow’s NatWest T20 Blast Finals Day

The club has said the event, the biggest day in the domestic cricket calendar, has attracted record ticket sales.

A crowd of 24,300 is set to descend on the stadium for the tournament’s conclusion and such has been the demand for tickets that the ground has retained the Turkish Airlines-sponsored temporary stand used in the recent Ashes Test Match to provide extra capacity.

It is the third consecutive year that Edgbaston has staged the event and to add extra spice to tomorrow’s showpiece event the teams contesting the semi-finals offer the prospect of a repeat of last year’s final when home side, the Birmingham Bears won the trophy in dramatic style against a Lancashire Lightning side buoyed by the presence of ex-England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.

The Bears contest the first semi-final against Northamptonshire Steelbacks and then Lancashire – now coached by ex-Edgbaston favourite Ashley Giles – take on Hampshire in the second game.

Colin Povey, chief executive of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, said: “Finals Day has become one of the biggest days out in the British sporting calendar and the vast majority of tickets for this year’s event had sold out even before the quarter finals.

“We have also seen a 25% increase in ticket sales for Birmingham Bears group games at Edgbaston this season, and are thrilled to have the opportunity to defend our title at home in front of a record crowd.

“Edgbaston is the home of Finals Day until 2018 and we’re looking forward to staging another memorable occasion for the supporters in attendance.”

In between the two semi-finals, the mascots of all 18 NatWest T20 Blast teams will compete on the field in the annual Mascot Race, with Sky Sports’ David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd providing the commentary from live inside the stadium.
