Serious fuel spillage shuts M6

8pm Update

Highways England says the situation will not be cleared until around 10.45pm. Delays in the area are still said to be severe.

THE M6 northbound in Birmingham is closed at Spaghetti Junction (J6) because of a serious fuel spillage covering the whole carriageway.

Delays are severe getting out of Birmingham and diversions have been set up to try and alleviate congestion.

Highways England said traffic was to exit the M6 at J6 onto the A38(M) heading towards the city centre and exit at the next junction onto the Park Circus roundabout (junctions with Victoria Road and B4132)  where traffic can turn and re-join the A38(M) out of the city and then re-join M6 northbound at J6.

It said drivers must allow plenty of extra time for their journey and may wish to consider using an alternative route if possible.
