Travel Update: M6 in Birmingham

THE M6 northbound in Birmingham has reopened after being closed for 10 hours following a major fuel spillage.

The closure at Spaghetti Junction (J6) caused rush-hour chaos last night but Highways England say engineers have worked throughout the night to carry out resurfacing repairs and the section of motorway concerned has now fully reopened.

There are no reports of congestion in the area at the moment.

The closure ignited memories of the situation two months ago when a fatal accident caused the northbound carriageway to be closed between Junctions 5 and 6 for almost 24 hours while emergency resurfacing was carried out.

Birmingham was gridlocked for much of the day and the incident prompted a major inquiry into why there was such a delay in getting the road reopened.

There are reports of slow traffic on the M42 southbound between junctions 6 (Birmingham Airport) and 5 (A45 for Solihull) because of an earlier accident.

Congestion is said to be stretching back to junction 8, the exit for the M6.
