5 ways to stand out at a networking event

Networking events don’t have to be boring and full of businessmen eating finger sandwiches, they can be a real opportunity for you to showcase your abilities and your company.

They can bring more business to your company as well as being a way of making new friends and acquaintances who can come in handy in the future. If you’re nervous about heading to a networking event, remember how useful they can be and try our tips when wanting to stand out.

1. Go over and talk to someone
Chances are, you’re all in the same boat at a networking event. It’s a bit like standing at the side of the hall at a school disco and waiting to see who will be the first to dance.

In order to succeed and get the most out of the event, you need to pluck up the courage and be able to go over to someone, introduce yourself and get chatting. Don’t be picky either, any of these people could need your services in the future.

2. Accept invitations
The best way to make new connections is to accept invitations given to you at networking events. By simply taking yourself out of your comfort zone and having the confidence to go to a networking event by yourself, you seem more confident in your company and people will get in touch.

3. Compliment people and listen
Instead of standing around, shaking a few hands and giving out a few business cards, actually engage in conversation with people. You will seem more real if you talk about something other than business, and if you pay people a compliment, even if it’s about their bag or a tie, you will make a good impression.

Also listen to what they say. One of the main reasons for networking is to learn – to find out more about people, companies and sectors – so pay attention to what people are talking about.

4. Follow up with others
After the event, make sure you get in touch with those you spoke to and make them aware of your company again. There’s no harm in doing this, as long as you don’t bombard them. Ask them if they’d like to meet for coffee to discuss opportunities or even just tell them how nice it was to meet them. If you want to leave a lasting impression, pick up the phone rather than texting or emailing, as you will come across as more confident and approachable.

5. Be yourself
It’s easy to have a different business persona, but at networking events you will become much more memorable and stand out more if you simply be yourself. Obviously you don’t need to tell them everything about yourself, but if you open up a little more, you appear more approachable.

Don’t see networking events as a chore but as an opportunity. Be positive and enthusiastic – otherwise, you might as well be at home watching TV.
