Birmingham manufacturer looks to sell surplus space

ONE of Birmingham’s oldest family firms is looking to let a 19,245 sq ft unit beside its Digbeth headquarters.

Crofts & Assinder previously used the building in Lombard Street as a storage warehouse but is now marketing it through SDL Bigwood at an asking rent of £68,000 per annum.

Les Balla, commercial agency and consultancy partner for SDL Bigwood, said: “Crofts & Assinder remains a very successful business but do not use this part of their complex.

“It is a modern style building which could remain in warehouse use or equally, subject to planning consents, might make an excellent workshop, just right for someone who can make the most of such an opportunity.”

Crofts & Assinder, founded in 1875, manufactures door handles and counts Rolls-Royce among its automotive customers.

The firm’s products have also been used in a host of famous landmark buildings including London’s Ritz and Waldorf hotels, the White House in Washington, Parliament House in Buenos Aires and ships of the Cunard and White Star Line, including on the Titanic.

Company chairman Guy Crofts said: “The unit was built in the early 1980s and we ceased manufacturing there in 1989/90, since when it has been let out.

“It is just a big open space and we are very much open to approaches from interested parties.”
