The best places to escape modern life in the UK

It’s easy to get caught up in a city lifestyle and the hustle and bustle to work each day. Sometimes it’s difficult to remember that there are places out there where you can get away from the worries of modern life, and many are right on our doorstep in Britain. Here are some of our suggestions to head to if you’re desperate to switch off.

1. Lundy Island in Devon
This is the perfect place to head to if you’re sick of your phone beeping every two seconds. Phone reception is pretty shocking on the island, which is just off the coast of north Devon. There’s no need to panic about getting tempted into checking Facebook on the island either, as the only pub on the island fines anyone caught using a laptop or mobile phone whilst in there. You can get four nights from £172 each at Castle Keep North .

2. Snowdonia National Park in North Wales
Snowdonia was granted dark sky status last year, meaning that there is no light pollution. So if you like the thought of star gazing whilst being surrounded by over 1,000 acres of woodland in Gwydir Forest, check out the whole range of self-catering cottages there, like Pentop Cottage , where prices start from £202 for two nights and there are waterfalls and nature trails nearby.

3. Inverie in Scotland
Described as a happy and healthy place to stay, Knoydart Hide accommodation offers the best hot tub view in Scotland. You will have a bit of an adventure getting there as there are no roads leading to the property. So you can decide between a water taxi or an 18-mile hike to get there. It will be worth it though when you kick back with a bottle of Prosecco on arrival.

4. Lake District in Cumbria
The Lake District boasts a range of cottages for you to unwind in and is the perfect place for romantic couples to enjoy. Pooley Bridge Boat House , which is on the western shores of Ullswater, offers stunning views and nothing but water for miles around. This is the ideal location if you’re eager to get out of the city, but still want to watch TV in bed and have an occasional scroll on Twitter.

5. Sark in the Channel Islands
Sark may not be classed as the UK, but it’s only a short journey from Britain and is the best place to head to if you’re completely sick of modern life. Sark was the first island in the world which earned dark sky status and it is one of the few remaining places in the world where cars are banned. The island has a tiny population of 600 and locals can only get around in tractors and on horse-drawn vehicles. Stay at La Maison Rouge Guest House from £35.00 a night.
