Business community tells Coventry’s new leader he must push growth

BUSINESS leaders in Coventry have told the new leader of the city council that he must continue to drive forward the city’s economic growth.

Cllr George Duggins has been elevated to leader following the ousting earlier this month of former leader Cllr Ann Lucas.

The Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce has welcomed his appointment and urged the city council to commit to maintaining links with local business and to keep going for growth.

Louise Bennett, chief executive of the chamber, said: “Over the years, we have seen many changes within councils across our patch and whatever the party or personality – at local, regional and national level – we will always engage with all of our politicians for the good of the region.

“We wish Cllr George Duggins and his new cabinet every success in what remain very difficult times for councils when it comes to funding.

“All we would ask is that the City Council continues the very strong relationship we have developed over recent years and that the growth of the economy remains at the forefront of its priorities. It is very reassuring to hear that Cllr Duggins is very much committed to that.”

She also acknowledged the role played by his predecessor.

“On behalf of the chamber and the business community, I believe it’s only right that Cllr Lucas and her team’s commitment to engaging with business in the city at every level should be recognised,” she said.

“There have been some tough, tough choices along the way and Ann has never been one to shy away from those.

“We (now) look forward to working with Cllr Duggins and his cabinet on how we can overcome those.”
