Wolverhampton markets regeneration site to would-be developers

A FORMER factory in Wolverhampton is being marketed for residential development as part of the city’s wider regeneration.

The city council believes the former Tower and Fort Works site, off Great Brickkiln Street, could be capable of sustaining 70 new homes.

Developers have been asked to submit expressions of interest to the council.

The project will see the 3.4 acres of land sold to the developer which offers the best quality family homes for private sale or rent.

A quarter of the homes will be set aside as affordable council houses at an estimated cost of £2m, which will come from the Housing Revenue Account.

The council hope to appoint a development partner by the end of summer 2016, with construction starting by spring 2017.

Cllr Peter Bilson, deputy leader and cabinet member for City Assets, said: “This is an exciting time for house building in Wolverhampton with a host of projects springing up to benefit everyone.

“Other sites in the city have attracted strong interest from investors and developers and I’m confident the Tower and Fort Works site will be no different.

“It is ideal for a new residential development as it is close to Wolverhampton city centre, is well served by transport links, and is near shops and leisure facilities.”

The council’s wider aim is to build 10,000 more homes in Wolverhampton by 2026.

This scheme follows the completion of 40 council homes at Thompson Avenue in August – the first new council houses to be built in Wolverhampton in 30 years.

A similar mixed residential project of private and council homes in Low Hill will also see construction start later this year on more than 100 homes at the former Tap Works in Showell Road, Broome Road and Fifth Avenue.

The site at Great Brickkiln Street was at one time used by motorcycle and car manufacturer Clyno. The company, which went out of existence in 1929 was at one time the third largest car maker in England behind Austin and Morris.
