New club aims to put Birmingham on the comedy map

A NEW comedy club is set to broaden the appeal of Birmingham’s night-time economy.

The new club, called The Comedy Loft, has launched at 6 On Broad Street with operators claiming it will put Birmingham on the comedy map.

The opening evening featured an exclusive preview show by well-known comedian Lee Nelson, who performed as a special extension to his Suited and Booted tour.

The launch marks the end of a two-year residency at Jongleurs for comedy producer Just the Tonic. It is taking over and will host weekend comedy nights at the venue on Fridays and Saturdays.

Just the Tonic has said it will bring a host of big-name comedians to the city, together with up-and-coming breakthrough acts. In the last few months alone, the producer has worked with acts including Johnny Vegas, Tom Stade, Ross Noble and Seann Walsh and it has already booked Reginald D Hunter and Paul Sinha to appear at the club in the coming months.

As part of the move, the venue will also become a home to weeknight comedy, as well as making Birmingham a destination for touring shows.

Ben McLaughlin, who runs The Comedy Loft, said: “We’re really excited about some of the amazing acts we already have lined up for the coming months. With top-class comedians playing at our weekend comedy nights, as well as the potential we have to become a home for weeknight comedy and touring shows, we’re set to put Birmingham on the map for comedy.

“Just the Tonic is well-known within the industry for putting on quality comedy nights, and we’re excited about the potential this partnership has to enable us to attract the best talent, and provide the best experience for our customers.”
