CWA bullish after livestock market win

BIRMINGHAM civil engineering consultancy CWA has been appointed to carry out the civil and structural engineering work on a £5.5m contract to expand a Leicestershire livestock market.

The city centre-based consultancy has secured the contract to work on the expansion and upgrade of Melton Mowbray cattle market on behalf of main contractor Morgan Sindall, which is carrying out the expansion for Melton Mowbray Borough Council.

The Scalford Road market was described as “not fit for purpose” by the local authority and failing to meet modern animal welfare standards. The improvements include new cowsheds, more visitor parking and improved access, and are expected to safeguard the future of the market on the site for at least 20 years.

CWA director Steve Wedge said the improvements would include environmental advances, including rainwater harvesting and solar panels.

“This is an interesting project jointly funded by Melton Borough Council and a £3.5 million Government grant. The improvements will safeguard the future of this important rural facility and provide state-of-the-art accommodation for both animals and clients,” he said. The work is expected to be completed by autumn.
