Strewth mate…Kings Heath set for a taste of Aussie cafe culture

A BIRMINGHAM suburb is set for a taste of Australia – and the move has nothing to do with the amber nectar.
Café and coffee shop Madcup is bringing a flavour of Aussie sophistication to Kings Heath after it negotiated a deal on new premises.
With the help of property agents Bond Wolfe, Madcup has identified a vacant unit on the town’s main shopping parade.
The café, due to open later in the summer, has taken a seven-year lease on 1,475 sq ft of space at 20 Alcester Road South at £25,000 per annum, moving in beside existing tenants including Lloyds Pharmacy, Lloyds TSB, and Sainsbury’s.
The letting is significant because it means the parade is now fully let.
Proprietor Kelly Kuok said: “Madcup will be known for its abundance of fresh and adventurous recipes.
“Inspired by the Australian cafe culture, we provide a wholesome and fun menu that’s fresh and innovative. One of our specials is Acai Bowl, which is made from the healthy and mighty super food, acai berries, with various toppings, something that has yet to be widely introduced in Birmingham. We also offer menu items as varied as gluten free hotcakes to dairy free chia pudding.
“Madcup is built on the philosophy of creating experiences for communities through quality products, innovations and an ever-evolving vision. Our mission is to grow our business in an adventurous yet sustainable way that respects the values of people and our planet. We source ethically and sustainably whenever possible.”
James Mattin, managing director, Bond Wolfe, said: “Properties in this parade have historically been rarely available due to long term leases.
“However, the downturn and the expiry of these leases left a few gaps which we are now managing to fill. Indeed, we recently concluded the letting of the former Post Office to a dessert parlour, number 30, which is now a jeweller, and the latest, number 20, which means the whole parade is once again fully let.”
