Management must clarify goals to workers in light of EU vote says Black Country boss

THE managing director of a Black Country engineering firm has called on her counterparts to reassure their workforces that any fallout from the vote to leave the EU can be minimised.

Kirsty Davies-Chinnock, who heads up Smethwick-based Professional Polishing Services, said it was now more important than ever that management effectively communicate their goals to their workers so they understood what needed to be done.

“In light of the referendum there needs to be some ground rules when it comes to business. Firstly, panicking doesn’t help anyone and will only cause further unrest in the markets,” she said.

“Secondly there may well be a period of financial disruption but that shouldn’t affect each and every one of us from looking at how to best to maximise every transaction.

“It has to be more than ‘business as usual’; management has to make sure that each and every company within the UK cannot only be sustainable, but continue to grow.”

She said this was where effective team communication was vital.

“Not only does it reassure employees but it also helps to bolster their commitment to the company and reduce worry,” she added.

“It is the role of every managing director and CEO to demonstrate their commitment through hard work and innovation and from this, great achievements can potentially be made.

“It is too soon to tell whether simple elbow grease and embracing change management will be silver bullets, but these characteristics are essential to supporting the UK economy as a whole.”

In addition to her role with PPS, Ms Davies-Chinnock is also a director of the British Stainless Steel Association – a body she first joined more than 20 years ago.

Originally formed as an association of stainless steel fabricators, the BSSA has steadily increased the scope and range of activities over the years.
It draws its membership from companies in all sectors of the industry and at all stages of the supply chain. It is representative of a broad cross-section of UK Industry; from larger multi-national companies to smaller, family-owned enterprises.

The association’s primary objective is to encourage the use of stainless steel in manufacturing and construction. The active involvement of members is encouraged through participation in forums and working groups dedicated to areas of specific interest.
