Wolverhampton expands arts and culture offering

WOLVERHAMPTON City Council in an attempt to promote the areas arts and culture offering to a wider audience is throwing open the doors of the city’s art gallery tomorrow (Sunday).

To celebrate the Sunday opening, the venue will be hosting a Caribbean-flavoured fun day.
 
Live music from Culture Dub Orchestra, All Hands on Decks and Al Newman will fill the Lichfield Street gallery’s spaces while visitors sample some of the food on offer.

Meanwhile children can have a go a Kalillo drumming workshops, face painting, dominoes and make mini-me figures.
 
Visitors can also enjoy two major art exhibitions celebrating Black creativity; In Fine Style: The Dancehall Art of Wilfred Limonious and Black Art in Focus, featuring major artists from the Black Art Group, which emerged in Wolverhampton in the 1980s and influenced a nation.
 
The Sunny Caribbean Sunday runs from 2pm at the gallery, which now opening its doors every Sunday from 11am-4pm.
 
Cllr John Reynolds, Wolverhampton’s cabinet member for City Economy, said: “This is a great way to kick off Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s new Sunday opening times.
 
“Sunny Caribbean Sunday is the first of lots of events happening on Sundays in the gallery through the summer and is part of the Enjoy Wolverhampton programme of attractions in the city from July 1 to 10.
 
“Everyone is welcome to come along and sample a taste of the Caribbean and enjoy the two exhibitions, one of which celebrates Britain’s Black Art Movement which had its roots here in Wolverhampton.”
