CWA appointed to prestigious leisure scheme

BIRMINGHAM civil and structural engineering consultancy, CWA has been appointed to the multi-million-pound project aimed at breathing new life into one of the city’s swimming baths.

The Great Charles Street consultancy has been appointed to carry out the civil and structural engineering work on the new Sparkhill swimming pool and leisure centre in Stratford Road.

The former baths and community centre has been closed since 2009 when asbestos fell from the roof into the pool. The project involves the demolition of the old building and the construction of a new facility on the site.

CWA, based in Lancaster House, was brought on board by contractors Pellikaan which is building the new centre on behalf of Birmingham City Council. The new centre will be run by Places for People Leisure Management.

The new centre will include a 25-metre six-lane swimming pool, a learner pool, an 80-station fitness suite, a dance studio, a community room and sauna and steam rooms. The design includes the installation of a full-size Olympic training pool which was de-commissioned after the London 2012 Olympics.

CWA director Jim O’Donnell said the consultancy was pleased to be contributing to the significant community project.

“The new centre will be a valuable sport and leisure venue for the area, which has been deprived of such facilities for nearly five years following the closure of the old baths and leisure centre. The building has been sensitively designed to complement neighbouring buildings,” he said.

CWA was established in 2011 as Copeland Wedge Associates. The consultancy provides civil and structural design consultancy services to a wide range of sectors including leisure, residential, education, health, industrial, retail, infrastructure and public bodies.

Major clients include Willmott Dixon Construction and Housing, Balfour Beatty, Seven Capital, RO Developments, Prologis, IM Properties, Morgan Sindell, Seddon and Bullock Construction.

The company has delivered buildings for major end-user clients including West Midlands Police, Birmingham City Council, Coventry City Council, Northamptonshire County Council, Housing 21, Midland Heart, Rooftop Housing, Orbit Homes, Chevin Homes, Wrekin Housing, University of Warwick, Aston University, Coventry Sports Foundation and Marks & Spencer.
