BAM secures deal for £40m care village in Worcestershire

SOLIHULL-based BAM Construction has secured a major new contract to build a £40m retirement complex in Worcestershire for BUPA-owned client Richmond Care Villages.

The constructor has been appointed to build the retirement village at Wood Norton, near Evesham, its second contract with the client.

It is currently building a similar retirement village in Witney, Oxfordshire.

The Worcestershire development, adjacent to the Wood Norton Hotel, is partly-situated on the site of the former BBC Residential Training Centre.

Once complete, it will create 48 village apartments for independent living, 46 suites for assisted living, and a 60-bed care home providing nursing and dementia care. In addition, there will be a wellness spa, lounges, library, terrace café, restaurant and garden bar.

BAM’s design arm is currently putting the final design touches to the scheme.

Demolition work on the former BBC centre has included removing roof tiles to allow bats to escape and the removal of hazardous asbestos.
Work is now taking place to remove around 26,000m3 of material for the basement of the new facility.

Construction should be completed in September 2018.

Rod Stiles, regional director for BAM Construction in the Midlands, said: “This is a significant high quality private development in a specialist sector (and) we are very appreciative that the client has put its trust in us again.

“Together with our major office scheme at Three Snowhill, and major education schemes for universities and the EFA in Birmingham, Coventry and Solihull, we have a diverse portfolio.”

Paddy Brice, managing director of Richmond Care Villages, added: “We are pleased to be working with BAM again on this prestigious new retirement village for Worcestershire.

“Richmond Wood Norton is an extremely complex development with a main care centre of 100,000 sq.ft, but I am confident that BAM have the expertise to deliver a fantastic building for us.”
