M6 junction closure to hit Birmingham rush-hour traffic

4.15PM UPDATE
THE M6 northbound carriageway has now reopened, but speed restrictions are in place and there are still long delays in the area.

3.50PM UPDATE

THERE are “long delays” on the M6 motorway northbound between junctions 5 and 7, which has now infected the A38(M) back to Waterlinks.

A HGV caught fire at around 8am and although the burnt-out vehicle has been removed, Highways England has said the road surface has been “severely damaged”.
The northbound carriageway has been closed all day at junction 7 and emergency resurfacing is continuing. Motorists on the M6 are being diverted past the area on the slip roads at the junction but there is heavy congestion, stretching back past junction 5.
Problems on the A38(M) are being exacerbated by the ongoing roadworks, which mean only two lanes are in use.
Highways England is advising motorists to consider alternative routes and to allow plenty of extra time for their journey.
