3pm – Update

DRIVERS are being warned of a full closure of the M54 in Shropshire.

The motorway is closed between Junction 6 (Telford West) and Junction 7 (Wellington).

There is stationary traffic in the area and long delays are reported, with traffic stretching back to Junction 5 (Telford Central).

Delays are likely until around 5pm and motorists have been advised to avoid the area if possible.

The cause has been given as a serious police incident.

Earlier, the M6 in Warwickshire was also closed due to a police incident.

The section of road between Junctions 2 and 3 is now clear and the southbound carriageway has been re-opened.

There are still residual delays in the area of around 20 minutes due to the backlog of vehicles.

Highways England has said the situation should be back to normal after 4pm.

THE M6 in Warwickshire has been completely closed to traffic following a police incident.

The section of motorway is between Junction 3 (exit for the A444 Nuneaton) and Junction 2 (exit for Coventry/Ansty Park).

Diversions are in operation with southbound traffic being told to follow the A444 around the Ricoh Arena and then on to the A428 at Binley, before heading north to rejoin the M6 at Junction 2. Northbound traffic is following the same diversion in reverse.

There are reports of major congestion in the area and Highways England has said it is working to try and clear the queues as quickly as possible.

However, the situation is not expected to clear until at least 3pm and drivers have been urged to avoid the area if at all possible.

The cause of the incident is not known.
