Bake Off stars to cook up a storm at Lichfield Food Festival

One of the best annual celebrations in the area is returning for another year this weekend. Lichfield Food Festival, which celebrates the very best of food and drink, has a range of things for you to taste and enjoy this bank holiday weekend, including live demonstrations from two Great British Bake Off stars.

Ali ImdadHoward Middleton, who found fame on the BBC One show in 2013 after the ‘Custardgate’ incident where #PoorHoward trended worldwide, will be one of the much loved Bake Off contestants appearing at the festival. He will be joined by local lad and former contestant Ali Imdad. The Brummie, who came ninth on the show, has since opened up his very own dessert parlour on Ladypool Road in Birmingham.

The pair will take to the stage and show the locals how it’s done with live demonstrations. Howard will showcase a range of gluten free recipes on Saturday and Ali will be baking his way through Sunday afternoon.

The event will also play host to a range of other exciting things, including a wide range of food and drink stalls, street food and pop up cocktail and coffee bars all in the city centre.

The city’s restaurants will also be joining in, offering top dishes, samples and special offers along Bird Street, including a pop up beach and free cocktail masterclasses.

Lichfield BID Manager, Morag Pringle, said: “From the cookery demonstrations to the festival market and Hue and Cry concert, we’re all so excited about Lichfield Food Festival.”

“The festival takes place throughout the city centre, so a good tip is to make sure you pick up a programme from one of our marshals so you don’t miss out on any of activities, events or street food.”

Hue and Cry80s pop duo Hue and Cry will perform a live acoustic outside Lichfield Cathedral on Saturday evening at 7.30pm. Places to the two-hour open air concert, that will feature top hits including Labour of Love and Looking for Linda, are free but the free spaces will be offered on a first come, first served basis.

There will be a family zone at the festival, featuring craft and cupcake decorating activities. There will also be tasters and offers at The Kitchen Shop on Market Street over both days of the festival and a local brewers’ event, offering real ale and craft cider in the Guildroom of the Guildhall on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, home bakers will be entering their cakes into the Birthday Bake Off and festival goers will be able to vote for their favourites between 11.30pm and 3pm, before the main judging by Cakeydora Baking Academy.
