Healthcare group extends national coverage with acquisition

BIRMINGHAM-based health and wellbeing group BHSF has strengthened its position in the occupational health services sector with a new acquisition.

The firm has acquired Nexus Healthcare, its eighth purchase since May 2012 and the deal is strategically significant as it provides its occupational health division with nationwide coverage.

In addition to occupational health, BHSF consists of a health insurer and an insurance brokerage which offers a range of personal insurances, employee benefits and HR support services to 3,100 client organisations.  In total, 400,000 people are covered under BHSF’s health and personal accident insurances.

Nexus, which was formed in 2005, provides high-quality occupational health services from its base in London.  The business is currently headed by its founder, Dr Steven Sperber, who will be continuing with BHSF.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Peter Maskell, BHSF group chief executive, said: “We are very pleased to have acquired such a successful business which will strengthen our OH proposition and give us greater presence in the marketplace especially in London and the South East.  Initially Nexus will be a subsidiary of BHSF Occupational Health, which is headed by managing director, Dr Philip McCrea.”

No redundancies are expected to arise in either company as a result of the deal.  In fact, BHSF is looking at expansion opportunities.

BHSF can trace its roots back to the formation of the Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund in 1873.
