£5m hotel development set to create 100 new jobs

AROUND 100 new jobs are set to be created in West Bromwich with the development of a new £5m hotel.

The 78-bedroom Travelodge is being built on a brownfield site at Providence Place, next to the West Bromwich Building Society’s new headquarters.

The development, another example of the ongoing regeneration of the Sandwell town, is being undertaken by Bromsgrove-based commercial property developer and contractor, Hinton Group.

Hinton director Andy Elwell and development director Jon Hinton, joined Sandwell Council leader, Cllr Steve Eling for the start of work on the development.

Last year marked the expansion of Hinton, together with the debut of its contracting arm, which successfully saw the completion of an 83-bedroom Travelodge in Oxford.

Hinton is also working closely with Travelodge – alongside other leisure and retail occupiers – on agreed schemes in Dudley, Telford and Bromsgrove.

Mr Elwell, who has led the development of more than 70 Travelodge hotels with more than 6,000 bedrooms, said: “It’s exciting to see the Travelodge development in West Bromwich get underway, providing the town with a much-needed facility in a key location.”

Work on the project is expected to be completed in Q2 2017. Once operational, the hotel will create 25 full and part-time jobs, while the construction project will support a further 80.

Cllr Eling said: “The Travelodge will create new jobs for local people, complement the adjacent office buildings and contribute to the ongoing regeneration of West Bromwich town centre.”

Travelodge’s UK development director Tony O’Brien said securing a prominent site for the scheme had been a major factor in the company’s decision to progress the hotel.

“There has been massive regeneration of West Bromwich’s town centre in the last few years, with millions of pounds having been invested in new retail, restaurant and entertainment facilities, the new college campus and leisure centre and lots of new flats and houses,” he said.

“The new Travelodge will now provide great quality, value accommodation for business and leisure customers visiting the town and surrounding area.”

The hotel will benefit from on-site car parking and a bar cafe, but will also have over 60 shops, 14 restaurants and cafes, a cinema and gym less than a 10-minute walk away.
