Funding deal is purrfect for Worcester vets

A WORCESTERSHIRE veterinary group has opened a brand new practice in Worcester after securing a six-figure finance deal.

Severn Veterinary Centre has opened the new practice, which is exclusively for cats, after support from RBS.

Cats@Severn Vets, based at Unit 12 Lowesmoor Wharf in Worcester, is the county’s first clinic dedicated to feline health and welfare.

Every element of the practice has been designed specifically to create a calm and comfortable surrounding for the cats and has been fully equipped with instruments designed specifically to treat them. Cats@Severn Vets also has its own on-site laboratory.

Four jobs have been created with the opening of the new clinic; with David Godfrey, a board-certified specialist in Feline Practice and RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Dermatology employed by the group to provide specialist care.

Cats@Severn Vets also has soft tissue and orthopaedic surgeons on site for all surgical cases and employs registered veterinary nursing staff who hold the certificate in Feline Practice. The practice is a member of the International Society of Feline Medicine.

The bank’s support enabled Severn Veterinary Centre to acquire the Worcester city branch of Wyre Forest Veterinary Centre, which was the previous occupant of the unit.

Caroline Queen, owner of Severn Veterinary Centre said: “There are a handful of feline only veterinary practices in the UK but this is the first one to open in the Worcestershire area.  Cats are very different to other animals and we wanted to create a practice which caters specifically for them so that they can be cared for in an environment where they feel as safe and comfortable as possible.

“All of our staff are cat lovers and are extremely knowledgeable about their needs both in and outside the veterinary clinic setting. They understand how to approach and handle cats gently and with care.

“The entire practice has been designed to cater for cats inherent likes and dislikes. For example, cats have an excellent sense of smell and hearing which can make them very sensitive and is why they do not like sharing kennel spaces with dogs, even if they quite happily live with dogs at home.”

She said the clinic had also designed a new waiting room with shelves for the animals to sit on. This has been done because cats often feel safer when high up or hiding.

“We have invested a great deal in equipment specifically designed for use on cats such as specific anaesthetic, blood, x-ray and monitoring machines and surgical equipment,” she added.

Kam Sangha, senior healthcare relationship manager at RBS, said: “I am thrilled that we have been able to support Severn Veterinary Centre with their latest practice opening.  Feline only practices are very popular in the USA and demand for such care facilities is growing in the UK.  In the region of 50% of all pets in the UK are cats so it makes real sense to create purpose designed practices to offer tailored feline care.”

Severn Veterinary Centre was established in 1999 by husband and wife team Jock and Caroline Queen. The group owns and operates a total of six practices across Worcestershire and Warwickshire; in Henley-in-Arden, Stratford-upon-Avon, Alcester, Warndon Villages, St Johns and now Worcester city centre.
