MG forges collaboration agreement with Birmingham colleges

AUTOMOTIVE company MG UK is continuing with its charm offensive following its decision last month to end assembly operations at Longbridge.

Keen to demonstrate it remains very much a part of the automotive – and business – community within Birmingham, the Chinese-owned firm has announced details of a new academic partnership.

The company, which employs close to 400 people at its Longbridge Design Centre, has forged the partnership with South and City College Birmingham and neighbouring Bournville College.

The agreement will see the organisations collaborate on projects intended to encourage students to pursue careers in automotive engineering.

Alongside providing four branded MG3 3Form Sport models for use by the colleges, MG will also supply a number of surplus models for students studying motorsport and engineering qualifications. These cars will enable pupils to practice new skills learnt in the classroom and improve their practical automotive knowledge.

Matthew Cheyne, Head of Sales and Marketing for MG Motor UK,said: “Partnering with two local colleges provides an excellent opportunity to identify and develop talented individuals and inspire them to consider a career in engineering.”

Steve Dourass, Business and Community Manager for South and City College Birmingham, added: “To be working with such a renowned brand is a huge boost for the college. The agreement will help our students to develop new skills in the classroom and supplement their academic knowledge with practical learning.”
