BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT has raised £12,000 for its charity partner, Acorns Children’s Hospice, after employees took part in a sponsored abseil.

More than 50 employees scaled the 32-metre Diamond House building, which is the headquarters of the airport’s management team.

Acorns, the airport’s nominated charity, organised the event to raise funds towards the hospice’s care for children and support for their families.

Acorns provides specialist, palliative care to life-limited and life-threatened children, young people and support for their families across the Midlands. In the last year the charity has supported more than 830 children and 1,060 families, including those who are bereaved.

Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport was one of those taking part – alongside David Strudley, former CEO of Acorns.

“It was excellent fun and it’s been great to see so many members of staff involved in the abseil this year. The money we’ve raised will undoubtedly help life limited children and their families in local communities as they go through a very difficult time,” said Mr Kehoe.

Since 2008 Birmingham Airport has raised over £60,000 for Acorns through various fundraising events including abseils, cake sales and raffles.

The money represents the proceeds of 18 months of fundraising.

Solicitors and staff at the firm collected cash in a variety of ways, including a family fun day, raffles, a daredevil sky dive, dress down days, and bake sales, as well as making donations in lieu of Christmas cards and for every client satisfaction survey completed.

The firm, which has offices in Wolverhampton, Willenhall, Shrewsbury, Telford and Bridgnorth, has also encouraged staff to learn more about the vitally important work of the organisation, with Midlands Air Ambulance representatives hosting a ‘lunch n learn’ session for staff. Employees also visited the RAF Cosford and Strensham airbases to gain further insight from the aircrew.

Kim Carr, managing partner of the firm, said: “We have been delighted to help support the incredible work carried out by the Midlands Air Ambulance. For us, it’s about giving something back to the communities we operate in. We feel that through supporting Midlands Air Ambulance Charity we have been able to help fund a local service that has saved so many lives already and continues to do so.”
