Heartlands care home plans given the green light

PLANS to demolish a Birmingham nursing home and replace it with a modern, multi-million-pound care facility have been approved.

Country Court Care had submitted proposals to Birmingham City Council for the demolition of the post-war Heartlands Nursing Home in Broadstone Road, Yardley and its replacement by a three storey, 66-bed care home.

The new home, which will be situated closer to the northern section of the wider site, fronting Meadway, will be an L-shaped building constructed of red brick, cream render panels, weather board cladding and grey roof tiles.

The 66 bedrooms will be accessed off a central corridor running along the length of the building with communal facilities consisting of dining rooms/social rooms and quiet lounges on each of the three floors. There will also be a café, hair salon and an additional quiet lounge at first floor level and a family room at second floor level.

There will also be landscaped gardens surrounding the building as well as a car park containing 20 spaces within the northern section of the wider existing care home site. Access will be off a newly-widened access off Broadstone Road.

The new facility will create an additional eight jobs on top of the 34 already working at the existing home.

Country Court Care has also agreed to replace a high wall surrounding the property with brick piers and railings which will open up views of the home and improve the street scene.

Planning said the new home would improve the character and quality of the area.

Councillors on Birmingham’s planning committee approved the proposals subject to their being no adverse comments regarding flooding of the site.
