Factory unit seriously damaged in major fire

A FACTORY unit in the Black Country has been seriously damaged by a major fire.

At its height, around 60 firefighters from across Birmingham and the Black Country were involved in tackling the blaze, which broke out at the unit in Cornwall Road around 7pm last night.

An initial six fire engines and one hydraulic platform were dispatched to the scene and this was later upgraded to 11 engines.

Firefighters used an aerial drone to fly over the large building to monitor the fire and assess where the hotspots were so the crews on the ground could better direct their efforts.

A high volume pump was also drafted in and crews used water from a nearby canal to quench the flames.

The extra engines enabled the firefighters to tackle the blaze from three sides and their efforts helped ensure that around half of the building was saved.

Five of the engines were released from the incident after around five hours but crews remain at the scene this morning.

The building is thought to have been used for storage.

The cause of the blaze is not known.
