Rail commuters face delays as overhead cable problems disrupt services

TRAIN services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham face major disruption today with journeys being delayed by up to 30 minutes due to damage to overhead power cables.

The disruption is affecting services on the Virgin Trains West Coast Mainline between Wolverhampton and Birmingham International, with trains bound for London suffering delays and diversions via Bescot Stadium.

As a result of the faulty cables – which are between Smethwick Galton Bridge and Birmingham New Street – trains are not stopping at Sandwell and Dudley station.

The delays are also being compounded by signalling problems at Birmingham New Street.

Only Virgin Trains services are affected by the problem.

Virgin, which has apologised for the delays, said the disruption was expected until the end of the day and has advised commuters to check on the situation before travelling.
