Traffic Alert: Separate accidents close M6 in two places

9am Update:

The accident between Junctions 7 and 8 is likely to take longer to clear than first thought because of a fuel spillage needing to be cleared up. Latest estimates are the scene won’t be clear until 11.30am.

The situation has also worsened further south, with the accident near Coventry now not expected to clear until after lunch.

Diversions remain in place.

A MULTI-VEHICLE accident has closed the southbound M6 in the West Midlands this morning.

The accident happened between Junction 2 (Coventry South/Ansty Park/M69) and Junction 1 (Rugby).

Traffic is being diverted off the motorway at Junction 2 but there is already serious congestion in the area with queues stretching back beyond Corley Services.

Police and highways engineers are on the scene but the accident is expected to take some time to clear with normal conditions not expected to return until after 10am at the earliest.

An accident between a car and a lorry is also causing problems further north between Junctions 7 (Great Barr) and 8 (M5).

All lanes are blocked and there is stationary traffic between the two junctions. The situation is not expected to return to normal until after 9am.

In the meantime, drivers have been advised to avoid the area if possible or to allow extra time for their journeys.
