Choose…a Trainspotting party in Digbeth

Cast your mind back to 1996: Take That were coming to an end and Spice Girls were making their breakthrough, the Duke and Duchess of York as well as the Prince and Princess of Wales were finalising their divorce settlements, Dolly the sheep was born and football was coming home. Well, it tried.

However, 1996 was the year that the Danny Boyle cult classic Trainspotting was released. The Academy Award nominated film follows a group of heroin addicts in Edinburgh and their passage through life.

The film has even been ranked 10th by the British Film Institute in its list of the Top 100 British films of all time and now, almost 21 years later, the film’s sequel T2 Trainspotting is to hit cinema screens next week and will star many of the original cast, including Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle.

A Birmingham venue is hosting two Trainspotting theme parties to celebrate the sequel’s release. The events will take place on Friday January 27 and Saturday January 28 at The Mockingbird Cinema, which is based in The Custard Factory in Digbeth.

MockingbirdThe Mockingbird puts on a range of events throughout the year, but chose to celebrate T2 Trainspotting as not only is it a classic, it also had a huge impact on the film industry and views on drugs and HIV.

The event is set to be packed full of all things Trainspotting.

James Anderson-Brown, co-owner of The Mockingbird, said: “The film is bound to be a hit, but we’re offering something slightly different. The night will be themed and will be a lot of fun.

“We are going to have the Trainspotting soundtrack on throughout the evening, as well as a DJ who will be playing Britpop classics to take people back to the 90s.

“There will also be themed drinks, with each character having their own, from Spud to Sick Boy cocktails. We think this event is the perfect opportunity to relive your youth.”

The event will begin at 8pm on both nights.
