Aldi moves up the supermarket rankings

Aldi has risen to fifth place in the supermarket rankings on market share as it continues to make inroads into a market that has long been dominated by the big four.
Since the Safeway brand disappeared in early 2006 after its takeover by Morrisons, the Co-operative has held fifth place, staying at least one percentage point ahead of sixth-placed Waitrose.
However the Kantar Worldpanel data showed Aldi overtook Waitrose in March 2015 and has now passed the Co-operative after its year-on-year sales increased 12.4% to £1.72bn.
In the 12 weeks to January 29, Aldi had 6.2% compared to the Co-op’s 6.0%. Tesco remains Britain’s biggest supermarket with 28.1%.
“Just a decade ago Aldi was the UK’s tenth largest food retailer, accounting for less than 2% of the grocery market,” said Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar Worldpanel.
“Since then the grocer has grown rapidly, climbing the rankings by an impressive five places to hold a 6.2% market share.
“Underpinned by an extensive programme of store openings, the past quarter has seen Aldi attract 826,000 more shoppers than during the same period last year.”
