Birmingham office redevelopment gets the go ahead

One Axis Square

Plans to redevelop a landmark office building in Birmingham city centre have been given the go ahead.

London & Continental Railways (LCR) had applied for permission to demolish the existing Axis building in Holliday Street, next to The Mailbox and replace it with a more modern scheme.

The proposals were approved by Birmingham’s planning committee yesterday.

The decision paves the way for the existing 1970s building to be demolished and replaced by a new nine-storey commercial office development, which is hoped to spearhead a wider regeneration scheme, plans for which are expected to be submitted shortly.

Land owner, LCR, is looking to deliver a vibrant new commercial office development totalling up to a million square feet across four new buildings, with ground floor retail uses and a new public square. The scheme is also set to vastly improve connectivity with nearby locations.

The scheme is designed by Fletcher Priest Architects supported by Quod as planning consultants. The public consultations have been managed by PR firm, Gough Bailey Wright.

LCR Development Manager Nick Clough said: “We are really looking forward to delivering the Axis Square development for Birmingham, a project of the highest quality in a
prime location.

“Consultation feedback has led to design changes, wider scheme improvements and the provision of funds for enhancing Navigation Street and the surrounding landscape. This approval means we can move forward and continue to work on future planning consents, delivering a range of benefits for the evolving city centre.”
